1. Syrian Endgame – the civil war in Syria rolls on, but there are signs that a bloody endgame is nearing. Once described as the ‘lynchpin to the Middle East peace process’ and with its central location, there is no doubt that whatever happens in Syria, the result will be further instability in a region that can scarcely afford it

2. EU / US Free Trade Agreement talks – This may sound dry, but the EU / US trade relationship accounts for about half the world’s economic output and nearly a third of world trade. The outcome of these talks will have a significant impact, with plenty of ripple effects influencing free trade policy around the world

3. Apple TV – 2013 looks set to be the year when Apple revolutionises the way we watch television. In such a competitive market, the iTV will not only become an iconic status symbol but could change the way we organise and access television content. For Apple is represents a chance to reinvigorate its growth trajectory and a chance to tap into one of the few areas where it is not already a key content gatekeeper

4. Great Gatsby – Baz Luhrmann’s big screen, big budget adaptation is set to open this May and looks set have an enormous influence on popular culture, fashion and hairstyles. Expect to see Art Deco, 20’s cocktails and side partings back in vogue – but the film also brings cultural fusions with music by Jay-Z and Jake White. 5. The Royal Baby – If you thought the Royal Wedding was unavoidable, this sequel is going to be even bigger… prepare for ever increasing global interest as the due date nears. In difficult times, a baby will be a much needed chance to put a smile back on the world’s face
