Sleep Hacking: A Crowdsight Analysis

In a world that is getting busier, more demanding and more stressful people are looking for ways to do things better and more productively: time is a luxury. As such people are looking to cut down on unproductive uses of time and sleep is increasingly seen as something that can be ‘hacked’.

Studies have shown that the better we sleep, the better we are prepared to face the challenges of the day. The question is how we can make sleep a ‘shortcut’ for greater productivity? Using Crowdsight, our crowdfunding analysis tool, we’ve reviewed ideas emerging on sites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo to get sight of how innovators are pioneering tomorrow’s ‘shortcuts’ – and which ones are gaining traction.

The most funded sleep-focused technology products on Kickstarter are solutions that optimise sleep, monitor behaviour, the environment and how people are woken up (e.g. like Sense).

There are other devices that are revolutionising sleep efficiency – from reducing the number of hours you need to sleep (i.e. NeuroOn) to devices that increase the regularity of lucid dreams (i.e. Aurora), that research has shown helps lower stress and anxiety.

These three innovations are some of the most successful in the arena of sleep on Kickstarter and have:

  • Been backed by almost 23,000 people
  • Gained over $3 million of investment
  • Been overfunded by 1000%

Sleep has been an area of fascination for centuries; from home remedies, to pharmaceutical solutions. Now, technology is set to revolutionise how we think about our night’s rest.

What’s seems key to the innovations being bought into is that they help the user learn more about how they sleep, what this means to them and how they can improve their night, so they can get a better rest in a shorter time. It seems an area ripe for big brands to enter – who knows what tomorrow morning will bring?
