{"id":1016,"date":"2018-05-23T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-05-22T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brand-genetics.test\/food-pioneers-learning-from-the-innovators\/"},"modified":"2019-11-19T16:33:03","modified_gmt":"2019-11-19T16:33:03","slug":"food-pioneers-learning-from-the-innovators","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brandgenetics.com\/pt\/food-pioneers-learning-from-the-innovators\/","title":{"rendered":"Food Pioneers &#8211; Learning from the Innovators"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As an innovation business, we are always inspired by stories from real innovators \u2013 so we were spoiled for choice at yesterday\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fdin.org.uk\/\">Food &amp; Drink Innovation Network<\/a> event, Food Pioneers.<\/p>\n<p>Fraser Doherty talked us through his compelling human story, subtitled \u201cthe adventures of Jam Boy\u201d.\u00a0Initially aged 14, he made 100% fruit jam, using his grandmother\u2019s recipe, and built the <a href=\"https:\/\/shop.superjam.co.uk\/\">SuperJam<\/a> brand from scratch.\u00a0 It\u2019s now sold as far afield as South Korea, and sits resplendently in the National Museum of Scotland,\u00a0 alongside such iconic Scottish brands as Irn Bru, Tunnocks Tea Cakes and Baxters Soup.<\/p>\n<p>Fraser\u2019s engaging self-deprecation only enhances his \u201cJam Boy\u201d story, and he concludes by informing us his grandmother is blissfully unaware of her intellectual property rights!\u00a0His recipe for success?\u00a0 \u201cNever expect to get it right first time round\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bighams.com\/\">Charlie Bigham\u2019s<\/a> passion was always to be different.\u00a0 He set out to transform the miserable \u201cready meals\u201d category, by producing naturally good food, with fresh ingredients, made in small batches as you would in your own kitchen at home.\u00a0 For Charlie, food is about pleasure and bringing people together, so he puts taste above price or process every time.\u00a0 Led by his flagship Fish Pie, 21 of his 40 recipes hold Great Taste awards, and consumers thank him for giving new meaning to the concept of \u201cconvenience food\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Charlie\u2019s advice to others includes being \u201cmildly obsessive\u201d and \u201cminding about the light bulbs\u201d \u2013 meaning that attention to detail is of paramount importance. \u00a0And he believes great businesses remain independent, so he politely tells any prospective takeover buyers to \u201cpiss off\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Finally Rob Wilson is Chief Toaster for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toastale.com\/\">Toast Ale<\/a> \u2013 beer brewed with bread waste.\u00a0 As the UK throws away 46 million slices of bread every day (a staggering 44% of all bread produced), Rob includes a slice of surplus bread in every bottle, with all profits going to the charity <a href=\"https:\/\/feedbackglobal.org\/\">Feedback<\/a>, which aims to eliminate food waste.\u00a0 The bottles carry subtle tasting notes (such as \u201cwell kneaded\u201d) and responsible drinking messaging (such as \u201cbread shouldn\u2019t be wasted, and neither should you\u201d)!\u00a0 But as with Charlie and Fraser, taste and enjoyment are key.\u00a0 So Rob\u2019s belief is that to change the world, you have to throw a better party than those who are destroying it.<\/p>\n<p>Rob advocates the combination of personality, authenticity and purpose.\u00a0 He believes in \u201cequity for good\u201d (vs Brewdog\u2019s \u201cequity for punks\u201d scheme), so he\u2019s motivated by setting up a Tinder scheme that matches bakeries and breweries, and by the fact that 30 million people have downloaded the Toast recipe.\u00a0 All well worth raising a Toast!<\/p>\n<p>Our conclusion?\u00a0 When people, passion and purpose come together, that\u2019s where the innovation magic starts to happen\u2026<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As an innovation business, we are always inspired by stories from real innovators \u2013 so we were spoiled for choice at yesterday\u2019s Food &amp; Drink Innovation Network event, Food Pioneers.
