Yet, testament to its ability to innovate, the spirit sector continues to prosper. &nbsp;The market is more diverse than ever, with global spirit sales estimated to grow by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thespiritsbusiness.com\/2018\/02\/global-spirits-sales-to-rise-by-3-4\/\">4.3% in 2018 \u2013 surpassing every other alcoholic drink category<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recently we made our annual pilgrimage to Imbibe Live, Europe\u2019s largest on-trade drinks exhibition, to explore the trends shaping the industry. &nbsp;Below we have outlined our four areas to watch for the rest of 2018 and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Imbibe-Live-Preview-835-783x375.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1) ZERO = HERO<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With reducing alcohol consumption on everyone\u2019s mind, non-alcholic offerings continue to innovate. &nbsp;With the door thrown open by Seedlip and a foundation of consumer education already established, larger players are increasingly looking to this space for NPD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrinksbusiness.com\/2018\/07\/pernod-ricard-ventures-into-non-alcoholic-gin\/\">Pernod Ricard announced the purchase of Ceder\u2019s non-alcoholic spirit<\/a>&nbsp;from its husband and wife founders while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrinksbusiness.com\/2017\/06\/diageos-distill-ventures-launches-non-alcoholic-drinks-fund\/\">Diageo is offering a \u00a310,000 fund for zero alcohol start-ups<\/a>. &nbsp;Similarly, London based Borough Wines new \u2018gin\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegrocer.co.uk\/buying-and-supplying\/new-product-development\/eight-new-alcohol-free-drinks-coming-to-supermarkets\/562366.article\">Labdanum<\/a>, appears to be going from strength to strength, offering an aromatic and complex profile, without the hangover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the more independent drinker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.borrago.com\/\">Borrago&nbsp;<\/a>takes it one step further with their #47 Paloma blend offering a naturally delicious grown-up drink, with no alcohol, sugar or calories.&nbsp;While,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.notginltd.com\/\">Sea Arch<\/a>&nbsp;takes inspiration from its coastal surroundings to deliver a flavour that is bright, fresh and full of flavour. &nbsp;With all this innovation 2018 is certain to see a hive of activity in this space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2) SAVOURY MOMENTS<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As excessive drinking declines and the impact of the recent sugar tax starts to bite, gone are the days of ultra-sweet cocktails designed to mask the acholic content. &nbsp;As a result, consumer pallets are searching for more flavourful drinks better suited to slower consumption. &nbsp;This, in turn, gives rise to more complex savoury flavours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tequila and Mezcal are both rapidly gaining popularity, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mexgrocer.co.uk\/Mezcal-El-camino-del-pensador.html\">El Camino Del Pensador Mezcal<\/a>&nbsp;our one to watch. &nbsp;The mixer category has similarly adapted to savoury preferences with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fever-tree.com\/refreshingly-light-cucumber-tonic-water\">Fever-tree\u2019s cucumber tonic water<\/a>&nbsp;and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coca-cola.co.uk\/newsroom\/press-releases\/explore-your-adventurous-side-with-schweppes-premium-new-1783-range\">Schweppes 1783 Salty Lemon tonic water<\/a>&nbsp;both proving hugely popular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This, combined with the increasing share and complexity of tonic syrups such as <a href=\"https:\/\/34oztonicmaison.com\/en\/products\/\">Honey Sour by 3 \/ 4 oz<\/a>&nbsp;makes for an innovative year of \u2018to be savoured\u2019 cocktail flavours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3) VERMOUTH RISING<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another spill-out of falling alcohol consumption is the rising popularity of lower ABV options over harder spirits. &nbsp;Vermouth is leading the charge;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.just-drinks.com\/analysis\/vermouth-the-next-big-thing-consumer-trends_id123611.aspx\">it is forecast to grow at a CAGR of more than 3% until 2021<\/a>&nbsp;becoming more than a mere cocktail ingredient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notables include Bodegas Lusta turning their vast experience to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sherrynotes.com\/2015\/reviews\/other\/vermut-lustau\/\">Vermut Lusta<\/a>&nbsp;based on two sherry wines selected by its enologist, Manuel Lozano. &nbsp;This side of the channel, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.albourneestate.co.uk\/product\/vermouth\/\">Albourne Estate<\/a>&nbsp;combines 40 botanicals into a semi-dry vermouth to capitalise on the growth of vermouth-specialist bars in London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether taken neat, with tonic, or in a classic Negroni, there is no doubt that the wonderfully bitter flavours of Vermouth will leave their mark in 2019!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4) LONG LIVE THE ABC&amp;T<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Britons set a new record, buying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/money\/2017\/dec\/16\/britons-set-new-gin-record-after-buying-47m-bottles-this-year-supermarkets-christmas\">47 million bottles of Gin in 2017<\/a>&#8211; the peak of a seemingly unstoppable march over the last 5 years. &nbsp;The craft revolution has carried the category into a premium space, pushing new boundaries for provenance as <em><a href=\"https:\/\/brandgenetics.preview.uk.com\/6-alcoholic-drinks-trends-from-imbibe-live-2015\/\">we noted in 2015<\/a><\/em>. &nbsp;Gin innovation (Ginnovation?!) has also explored exotic new flavours and colours, with over 100 brands now available in the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While it will be interesting to see what the category does next, here at BG we see the big innovations happening in other categories. &nbsp;One area that continues to see huge progression off the back of the G&amp;T craze is the broader spirit + tonic category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The complex flavours of Mezcal and Vermouth both build on the trends highlighted by offering fantastic partners to premium tonic. &nbsp;Similarly, the 200-year-old secret recipe of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lanique.co.uk\/\">Lanique<\/a>&nbsp;throws its hat into the ring as a great alternative. &nbsp;Overall, as premium tonic continues to innovate at an impressive rate, it is exciting to see the wider world of spirits explore the new flavour potentials in the next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That concludes our areas to watch in the spirits
