And the very platforms designed to help them meet people aren\u2019t inspiring any love stories either. Dating apps \u2013 once hailed as the frictionless path to your happily-ever-after \u2013 are now synonymous with fatigue. With 90% of Gen Z daters reportedly frustrated by endless swiping (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/3966b57d-110d-47ba-9421-4a9bdeb01b4e\">Financial Times<\/a>), and 80% of US college students foregoing them altogether (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/end-of-dating-apps\/\">Wired<\/a>), dissatisfaction has never been higher. All this, and the dating app marketing is still expected to go from $8.5B to $17B in the next five years. The gap between market projection and young user\u2019s sentiment has never been wider.<\/p>\n<p>Which brings us to Hinge \u2013 the star of today\u2019s instalment of our <em>Decoding the DNA of\u2026 <\/em>series. Our Insights, Innovation &amp; Strategy Consultant Karam Hansen uses the <a href=\"https:\/\/brandgenetics.com\/pt\/what-we-do\/\"><em>DNA model<\/em><\/a> to explore how Hinge positions itself as the antidote to \u2018swipe culture\u2019 \u2013 tapping into daters\u2019 desire for a slower, more intentional, more human connection in a world overwhelmed by fast-paced, profit-driven intentions.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Swipe right for something real<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Hinge has long been a trendsetter in the dating app world. Since its launch in 2013, it positioned itself not as a place for casual encounters but as <em>the<\/em> relationship app. And in 2019, it leaned all the way in with its deliciously paradoxical \u2018Designed to be deleted\u2019 campaign, promising users they\u2019d only need the app long enough to leave it behind. Glowing mentions from The New York Times and nods from public figures such as Pete Buttigieg meant Hinge was a breath of fresh air in the dating app market \u2013 the one you bring home to meet your parents.<\/p>\n<p>Its ethos came to life again in August 2024 with the launch of \u2018No Ordinary Love\u2019, <em>\u201can anthology of love stories that encourages daters to challenge the notion of \u2018perfect fairytale beginnings\u2019 and celebrate the beautiful imperfections of real relationships.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Tapping into the meteoric rise of \u2018BookTok\u2019, particularly its romance-obsessed corner, Hinge paired six contemporary writers with real couples who met on the app, creating exactly what the audience ordered: authentic romance. The result was an 80-page zine created in collaboration with Dazed Studio, accompanied by OOH placements across London, Los Angeles, New York, and Sydney \u2013 reminding passers-by that love is still worth rooting for.<\/p>\n<p>And, boy, did people root for it! Hinge reported a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inc.com\/viktoriia-vasileva\/hinge-wants-to-get-gen-z-dating-its-solution-is-novel\/91186294\">10.5% jump in brand consideration<\/a> in the US, with <a href=\"https:\/\/dazed.studio\/our-work\/hinge-no-ordinary-love-2024\/#:~:text=TOTAL%20Impressions%20+44%25%20Over%20Delivery,seconds%20more%20than%20Editorial%20benchmark\">impressions beating industry norms by 44%.<\/a> As any good romance franchise would, the brand returned for a second instalment in May 2025, this time partnering with well-loved Substack writers to tell a new wave of modern love stories \u2013 later compiled into a collectible, Jane Austen-coded book fit for the romantic\u2019s nightstand.<\/p>\n<p>By recognising how its own technology had helped create the very emotional fatigue its audience was feeling, Hinge was able to distance itself from the transactional \u2018swipe culture\u2019 and reframe its purpose around meaningful human connections.
