Interestingly, there is a growing \u201cAnti-Valentine\u2019s Day camp\u201d with 35% of spending on friends, family, pets or most importantly, themselves. Perhaps this should come as no surprise, currently around a third of the UK\u2019s adult population are single and we are seeing a demographic shift towards individualism, resulting in greater consumption of self-care products and services. This year 11% of people bought Valentine\u2019s gifts for themselves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">There is further evidence to support this trend with <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2018\/feb\/13\/valentines-day-galentines-day-amy-poehler-girlfriends\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2018\/feb\/13\/valentines-day-galentines-day-amy-poehler-girlfriends\">the rise of Galentine\u2019s<\/a>, the celebration one\u2019s gal-friends, in recent years. With female empowerment showing no signs of slowing down, women and men continue to challenge gender roles and new definitions of what constitute romantic relationships are emerging.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"graf graf--figure\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"graf-image aligncenter\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/1D4AV6VrFhGSxooChApf-JA.jpeg\" data-image-id=\"1*D4AV6VrFhGSxooChApf-JA.jpeg\" data-width=\"640\" data-height=\"512\" data-is-featured=\"true\" \/><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>AI-generated Love Hearts created with neural networks\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\">On a lighter note, we loved <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/tldr\/2018\/2\/12\/17004556\/ai-generated-love-hearts-neural-network-janelle-shane\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/tldr\/2018\/2\/12\/17004556\/ai-generated-love-hearts-neural-network-janelle-shane\">these hilarious AI-generated Love Heart <\/a>messages which went viral. Designed by engineer Janelle Shane, Shane collected as many genuine candy heart messages as she could find, feeding them into a neural network. An algorithm then detected patterns in this data, and generating new messages such as \u201cStank Love\u201d and \u201cSweat Poo\u201d\u2026 These Love Hearts remind us AI is not quite as sophisticated as many suggest.
