The Human Code Issue 6 // Decoding the DNA of the Fauxstalgia
Brand Genetics
Most business strategy relies on flawless logic, which is why it fails in a world governed by delightfully irrational human behaviour. Brand Genetics’ The Human Code is the antidote to spreadsheet-think – revealing the hidden motivations that drive brand growth.
For our sixth edition, we decode the DNA of ‘Fauxstalgia’ and the rise of the finite consumer.
For decades, tech assumed optimising effort to zero would maximise loyalty. Instead, zero friction inadvertently generated zero emotional value.
Today, with over 1 in 4 Gen Zs buying ‘dumbphones’ and vinyl sales surging, consumers are actively pushing back against the “Infinity Trap”. Underneath the vintage aesthetic lies a deliberate embrace of friction, powered by the effort heuristic and a growing appetite for bounded, tactile experiences.
Brands banking solely on seamless convenience risk eroding their emotional equity. Sustainable growth comes from designing “Mindful Hurdles” that give consumers a reason to slow down and truly value the experience.
Read Issue 6 below to explore the full breakdown.
Over 1 in 4 (28%) Gen Z adults are buying a ‘dumbphone’ to escape their screens. Decoding the DNA of Fauxstalgia — Escaping Infinity: The Rise of the Finite Consumer.
Over 1 in 4 (28%) Gen Z adults are buying a ‘dumbphone’ to escape their screens – the highest rate of any generation
The foundational logic of tech and innovation has been to eliminate friction. We made music libraries infinite, photography instant, and checkout processes seamless.
We assumed that optimising effort to zero would generate ultimate loyalty. But by optimising effort to zero, we accidentally optimised emotional value to zero as well.
We are now witnessing a profound behavioural correction. Young consumers are aggressively buying vinyl records, early-2000s digital cameras, and basic flip-phones. Whilst on the surface this ‘fauxstalgia’ looks like cosplaying a bygone era the reasons run much deeper.
The human mind is not evolved to process infinity. To survive, consumers are artificially imposing limits. They are developing the psychological skill of digital minimalism and seeking out products that offer tactile, bounded, and deliberate experiences.
Welcome to the era of choosing friction
So what?
Stop assuming your consumers want endless options and frictionless ease
To unlock growth, you must learn to design “Mindful Hurdles.” Offer tangible, finite, and ownable experiences
The future of premium brand loyalty isn’t about giving people everything instantly; it is about giving them a reason to slow down and enjoy it

The Effort Heuristic
Why does taking a photo on a 2004 digital camera and waiting to download it feel better than an instant 4K iPhone shot?
This month, we decode the “Effort Heuristic” – the psychological reality that humans assign greater emotional weight to outcomes that require friction. In this article, we explore why the fundamental motivation isn’t about a desire for the past, but a demand for the finite.
In the digital economy, the “Buy Now” button on your favourite digital storefront is a legal illusion. Consumers have begun to recognise that it doesn’t mean you buy a movie, a book, or an album – they are merely renting a temporary, revocable license.
In an environment where tech giants can (and do) delete digital libraries overnight, consumers are experiencing a profound crisis of control. To reclaim their environmental agency, they are fleeing back to physical, un-hackable, analog media.
To survive the digital age, consumers have had to develop a new psychological capability. They have successfully flipped the mental shortcut from “Old = Bad/Left Behind” to “Old = Authentic/Mindful”.
Disconnecting has moved from a sign of technological incompetence to a status symbol that indicates the capability to engage in technology with restraint.
